History of Issue

Helicopter noise has long been a quality of life issue for years and North Shore residents have been plagued with noise pollution caused by frequent trips of low-flying helicopters traveling back and forth to the Hamptons. The noise is disruptive and unnecessary. Historically, helicopter operators were under a voluntary agreement to reroute their flight paths, and a complaint hotline exists for the public to report rogue helicopter flights. Both the voluntary agreement as well as the hotline has proved useless because helicopters operators continue to break this voluntary agreement. In light of this, the fight for helicopter regulation continues.

More recently, the FAA has agreed to regulate helicopter traffic over Long Island through proposed rule making. The purpose of this website is to further hold accountable the helicopter operators by complaining directly to the FAA. Assemblyman Marc Alessi along with two other East End elected officials, Senator Kenneth LaValle and Legislator Ed Romaine have called on the FAA to raise the minimum altitude to 3000 feet and for helicopters to fly 1 mile away from the shore over water. Please click here to read their comments filed with the FAA.

As one unified community, we must continue to report and document helicopters that are disruptive and unsafe. Please use this site as a means of communicating your complaint directly to the FAA. Make sure to include the date, time and location of your helicopter complaint for their records.
